Sherlock intimately understands the joys of forcing people to give him what he wants, so I imagine watching John rediscover his manipulative streak (having had it smacked out of him in the army) was probably deeply entertaining for him. Sherlock is pleased that he’s succeeded getting into Baskerville, but I think that look on his face is actually delight in finding that John doesn’t always play by the rules.
I loved this scene, because it put John firmly at Sherlock’s side in everyone else’s eyes, for just a moment. His poise and groundedness was just as pervasive, and just as influential, as Sherlock’s elusive approach, and the combination of the two is the only way they got into Baskerville. If one or the other had tried to break in alone, they would have failed miserably. Sherlock’s stolen credentials would get him nowhere if he had to play off the military angle by himself, and John’s rank would mean nothing without Sherlock’s connections.
My OTP is More Badass Than Yours, and there is a reason I say that so often in my tags; this is the perfect example. Separately, they are each on the verge of wonderful things - but together, they are completely unstoppable.
